Peter Whelan leads one of the greatest Baroque challenges, supported by professional singers from the Helsinki Chamber Choir. The staunchly Protestant Bach composed his gigantic Catholic Mass for Augustus III of Saxony in his pursuit of the title of court composer. Saxony was a stronghold of Protestantism, but when given the opportunity to ascend to the Polish throne, the Electors of Dresden were forced to convert to Catholicism. For Bach, the link to the Dresden court offered a trump card in his disputes with the bureaucrats of Leipzig. Over the years, the work grew into a huge ordinarium mass, which in its richness and inventiveness surpasses the composer's other works. The Mass in B minor eventually became a synthesis of Bach's musical and spiritual ideals, a true encyclopedia and monument of Baroque art.
