Einojuhani Rautavaara and Ludwig van Beethoven - together out loud

In its first collaboration with the Vaasa City Orchestra, the Helsinki Chamber Choir throws the spotlight on works by Einojuhani Rautavaara, who died ten years ago, in 2016, and Ludwig van Beethoven, the 200th anniversary of whose death will be marked in 2027. Elegies by both composers precede a performance of Beethoven’s quietly radiant Mass in C major. The underrehearsed premiere of the Mass led its commissioner, Prince Esterházy, to write that “Beethoven's mass is unbearably ridiculous and detestable”. History has judged the work much more kindly!
The concert is part of the Vaasa Choir Festival.
